2010 - Kawasaki GTR1400

    2010 - Kawasaki GTR1400
    MCN overall verdict
Kawasaki has given the GTR a significant upgrade, added to the comfort of the original model with a larger screen and include heated grips as standard. But more interestingly they’ve improved the safety of their flagship tourer with new ABS and traction control. The traction control is really impressive and works off the ABS wheel sensors and is the most advanced system currently available on a road bike.

    2010 - Kawasaki GTR1400

    Engine
Thankfully Kawasaki has left the engine alone, which has been a strong point of the larger tourer. The powerplant is taken from the mighty ZZ-R1400 but detuned for more midrange. The GTR also now boasts variable valve timing, the first on any Kawasaki, which has the smoothest operation on the market, far better than Honda’s VFR. It also has nearly 140bhp and gallons of torque, both of which are class-leading.

    Ride and Handling
Kawasaki hasn’t played around with the handling, either, which was not a fault of the old model. There’s a slightly stiffer spring at the rear, but that’s about it. For a large bike, the GTR can be hustled along with confidence, but you need a lot of confidence in the front Bridgestone tyre, which has been specifically designed for this model. The new linked ABS braking is excellent, and it’s changeable for riding fully loaded or with pillion and luggage.

    Equipment
This is an area where the old GTR lacked, especially when compared to the competition from BMW. However, Kawasaki has addressed this and now the GTR comes with more options as standard like heated grips, larger screen, ABS and traction control as standard. There is also an additional mode button on the left bar to scroll through the informative clocks while the electric screen is pre-programmable.

2010 - Harley-Davidson XR1200X

    Harley-Davidson XR1200X
    MCN overall verdict
Based on the 2009 XR1200, the XR1200X is slightly more sports biased than the sports biased XR1200. Confused? Don’t be. All you have to think about is the X-model has vastly improved, multi-adjustable suspension that makes a difference when riding 187kg of American muscle on our roads. It also comes in a menacing black paint scheme with black exhausts. Engine spec remains the same as the XR1200. Just remember Harley’s idea of sports bike performance is nothing like a 600-1000cc sports machine produced in the past 20 years.

    Harley-Davidson XR1200X

    Engine
The air-cooled 1202cc is all torque – 74ftlb of it – with not a lot more horsepower to top off the lowdown punt, but then it is based on the 1200 Sportster but with higher compression and upswept, high volume 2:1:2 exhausts (see XR1200 review for full details).

    Harley-Davidson XR1200X

    Ride and Handling
The addition of Showa pig piston forks and piggyback shocks puts the accomplished XR1200 onto another rung of the handling ladder. There’s a lot more feedback from front and rear wheels and the front end feels considerably more settled on the brakes. At the same time it is supple enough to rubbish the Queen’s crumbling highways. This means you can actually wring every last drop of performance from the XR1200X and make use of it. Or simply enjoy the slow revving nature of the bike with an improved, polished even, ride quality.

    Quality and Reliability
The Harley-Davidson chassis range is slowly but surely getting updated. Better brakes and suspension figure highly, as per the XR1200 and XR1200X. But somewhere along the line H-D have forgotten about the simple things like why is the clutch cable flapping in the breeze; why are the footpegs and foot controls so chunky-ugly yet so loose, and so on?

2010 - Honda VFR series V4 Sports Tourer

The new Sports Tourer from Honda with variable-cylinder engine, which enables the rear bank of cylinders to shut down completely, leaving the bike effectively a parallel twin on light loads, which should dramatically boost fuel economy and emissions performance. This trend with Honda seems to continue from Cars to motorcycles these days. First time we came across variable-cylinder engine was with Honda Accord V6, now its Honda V4 Sports Tourer.

    Honda VFR series V4

The frame reminiscent of the first ZZR1100’s vast girders – hints at what must be approaching 200bhp potential. Honda goes next with its new V4 platform, what else is special about that V5-derived engine and what it means for the Blackbird and Pan-European.
